Project 1: Diagramming Architectural Principles

(Group) In the span of 2 weeks, we analyzed the design principles and elements of an assigned house, then convey these findings through diagrams. The interpretation was up to us, but our visualization had to be concise, readable, and easily understood. Our assigned building was the Shrimp House designed by UID Architects in Japan. Go to Final Product.

My group composed of:

  • Teoh Jin Wen (myself)

  • Alfred Lim Shyi Yuen

  • Chern Xuan Tong

  • Zuha Rafat

  • Josiah Por Yi Sheng

  • Low Tze Hong

Research

Firstly, we delegated tasks for research and drawing. This was to have a clear understanding of the building's layout, elements, materiality and core principles.

Orthographic drawings

We gathered information on the architects' intentions and the building's history. Then based on the architects' original drawings, we prepared a set of 9 orthogrpahic drawings, including:

  • 1 Site Plan

  • 1 Ground Floor and 1 First Floor plan

  • 4 Elevations

  • 1 Section

  • 1 Interior Perspective

Here are the Elevation drawings I did.

Diagramming

Referencing the works in Roger H. Clark & Michael Pause's Precedents in Architecture, and Francis D.K. Ching's drawings, we conducted and conveyed our analysis through diagrams. We used the prepared orthographic drawings as a foundation for this analysis.

The diagrams we produced are as follows:

  • Parti/Concept

  • Structure

  • Context

  • Space Planning

  • Circulation

I was delegated the task of analyzing Shrimp House's circulation. Here are my attempts up to the finalized diagram.

Modelling

Next, we each created models that further illustrated different aspects of our analysis. Following the diagram, I created a circulation model of the Shrimp House. Here are my attempts up to the final model.

Reflection and Learning Outcome

TGC 2.2. Locate, extract, synthesize and utilize information effectively

Under the guidance of our tutors, we were able to locate the most relevant information about our building. We were also taught how to clearly and concisely convey information through her suggestions.

TGC 5.1 Understand team dynamics and mobilize the power of teams

This, as the first project, introduced ourselves to each other's working style. By delegating tasks, we were able to get so many drawings, diagrams and models done within a short time.

MLO 1
Magnifying Glass

MLO 1 - Explore architectural design through the abstraction of 2-dimensional
and 3- dimensional composition of space.

By observing Shrimp House in both a 3D and 2D context, I now have a clearer process of converting 2D ideas into 3-Dimensional contexts.
