Project 1: Passive Green Building Case Studies Poster & Booklet
(Group) Together as a team of 5, we were to conduct a comparative case study observing the overall passive sustainability of two buildings, one from a tropical climate and the other from a different climate of our choice. We were tasked to analyze the application of passive design strategies in the fields of site panning, daylighting, facade design, strategic landscaping, and natural ventilation.
My group was composed of:
-
Teoh Jin Wen (myself)
-
Lim Zhi Ying (leader)
-
Chew Synn Yi
-
Nurin Qistina
-
Ng Wan Ling
We compiled our findings in a poster and A4 report booklet, and presented our findings through a recorded presentation video.
Go to Final Product.
Research and Analysis: Natural Ventilation
After some discussion in which we proposed several possible buildings, we decided on the Binh Duong High school in Vietnam for the tropical case study, and the Powerhouse Brattorkaia in Norway for the second case study.
We each covered an area of sustainable strategies to identify and evaluate for both buildings. I chose to cover the natural ventilation strategies for the buildings and gathered initial findings in a shared Miro board. This Miro board was used to update each other on our progress and was used to facilitate some of our meetings as well.
A4 Report
This report includes an overview of both buildings, then identification and analysis of the passive strategies, categorized as Site Planning, Daylighting, Facade Design, Strategic Landscaping and Natural Ventilation.

Reflection and Learning Outcome
MLO 1
MLO 1 - Describe passive sustainable design, its green technologies and its applicable design strategies.
I learned of new design strategies and the terms used to describe them, such as radiant cooling, thermal stratification phenomena, thermal bodies etc. This will be useful in future projects and when conveying strategies to ensure a more sustainable design.
TGC 2.0-
LIFELONG LEARNING
TGC 2.2. Locate, extract, synthesize and utilize information effectively.
We tried to effectively use sites and online tools to find the information we need and to quickly prepare the diagrams that demonstrate how the design strategies worked.
TGC 3.0-
THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS
TGC 3.1. Think critically and creatively
Our leader, Zhi Ying, was very effective in decision-making and I took notes from how she lead discussions and problem-solved.
I was able to voice out suggestions and concerns in a mostly timely manner, and was able to come to solutions with my groupmates.
TGC 7.0-
CITIZENSHIP AND GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
TGC 7.1. Be aware of and form opinions from diverse perspectives.
This exercise required us to consider multiple factors such as climate, sun hours, building function, etc. to think of building design in a more detailed manner as we had to find common ground between the two buildings to conduct a comparison and draw up conclusions.
