Site Visit
To gain a clearer picture of the street's current state, three of us took the opportunity to visit the street in light of a loosened MCO. Several problems were identified, such as a concerning state of decay in numerous buildings, much vandalism, a loss in original structures etc. There were also many culturally significant structures, however, that were in better shape.
Conceptual Framework
Through weekly group discussions, we constructed our conceptual framework. While it took a while to word it properly, the main issue we decided to address was the unsustainable tourism that Jalan Tun HS Lee was experiencing.
Research and Case Studies
Through many revisions under our tutor's guidance, we established the following research questions:
-
How to maintain and restore traditional Chinese shophouses and temples while sustaining the tourism industry?
-
How does the architectural heritage along Jalan Tun HS Lee -- as illustrated by the historically rich Malaysia -- help to attract tourists?
-
How can we/the government assist business owners in maintaining and sustaining local tourism and heritage?
-
How to ensure the tourism industry recovers from the unconducive economic conditions brought by the pandemic?
We then conducted case studies on other places that have faced and passed similar problems in Jalan Tun HS Lee.
