Assignment 1: Famous Architect's Building
Materials Application: Architectural and Structural

(Ind) Through research on the Asakusa Culture and Tourist Information Centre, I was to understand the practical application of its architectural and structural materials. The information then had to be compiled into a 2-page infographic.

Research

The research and analysis were split into:

  • Introduction to the architect and the building

  • Architectural materials x5

  • Structural materials x2

  • Installation of a structural material

The main resources that I consulted were videos in which the architect himself elaborated on the project as well as verified architectural design sites such as Archdaily that included official construction drawings. The exact materials used were confirmed through further consultation with my tutor, Ar. Edwin. I visited several material suppliers catalogues for the characteristics, installation and use of the materials afterwards.

Reflection + Learning

MLO 1
Magnifying Glass

MLO 1 - Identify the basic building construction and materials used in
construction.

During research and through the application of knowledge from lectures, my mental library of materials has expanded.

TGC1.3 Understand professional practice within the field of study

This project urged me to scrutinize the use of different materials by looking at how their characteristics aided or held the building back. By establishing how heat resistant, how insulated, how strong etc. a material was and its chemistry with other components, I better understood the considerations needed in practical design.
