Project 2: Green Building Strategies Report
(Group) This project was conducted in conjunction with the final studio project of this semester. I had to detail a report on the various sustainable passive design strategies employed in the Wellness Centre, including how they influence the building design and overall user experience.
The categories covered were:
-
Site Planning
-
Daylighting
-
Facade Design
-
Natural Ventilation
-
Strategic Landscaping
A3 Report
Included within the report are a brief introduction to the building and the aforementioned categories that were tackled by the passive design strategies employed in the project.
Reflection and Learning Outcome
MLO 3
MLO 3 - Analyze passive sustainable design strategies in relation to climate and culture and compare their impact on space and user experience.
I practiced consideration of the climate and the surrounding culture when designing the building, keeping in mind the appropriateness of the material and style. While I believe the end result has achieved the necessary climatic reponse, I think there is much to improve on.
TGC 1.0-
DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE
TGC 1.1. Able to put theories into practice.
Using what I learned from lectures and previous semesters on sustainable building design, construction systems and general use of physics to induce comfortable internal environments, I tried implementing the use of evaporative cooling, sun shading, double roof systems etc. into the wellness centre's design.
TGC 2.0-
LIFELONG LEARNING
TGC 2.2. Locate, extract, synthesize and utilize information effectively.
I was able to identify the key environmental conditions that I wished to tackle and/or accomodate early on. This, along with my tutor's advice, helped to inform the key building features, such as the use of courtyards and perforated walls.
TGC 3.0-
THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS
TGC 3.2. Define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solutions.
I managed to arrive at appropriate solutions to daylighting, such as with the use of reflective ceilings and a clusteed typology to create courtyards that bring light in to every corner of the building. It was a great practice in applying critical thinking and problem solving skills.
