Project 1: Architectural Conservation & Tourism in Malaysia & Abroad - Comparative Case Study

(Individual) We were to conduct a comparative case study of two similar heritage buildings, one of which had to be a local gazetted heritage building in Malaysia (Warisan / Warisan Kebangsaan), while the other could be from any other country. This project exposed us to some of the earliest historical buildings of Malaysia and deepened our understanding of the relationship between their conservation and heritage tourism. I've since understood more the importance of preserving and promoting a site's intangible and tangible heritage is crucial to a place's identity.

After consulting with my tutor, I decided on the Leaning Clocktower of Teluk Intan and the Leaning Tower of Pisa for this comparative case study.

I was to prepare an A2 size research poster and presentation slides that compiled all my findings.

Research, Analysis and Comparison

Our research and analysis of the heritage buildings had to cover the following for each of the buildings, highlighting any similarities or differences between them where appropriate:

  • Establishment

  • Timeline of Usage

  • Significant Historical Events tied to the building

  • Current Ownership and Management of the building

  • The Heritage Attraction presented to the building

  • Present Tourist Visitation and Response

  • Issues and Challenges faced promoting the building or site

Presentation Slides

These slides were prepared for the online presentation on Week 8.

DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE

TGC 1.2. Understand ethical issues in the context of the field of study

It is difficult to ensure the longevity of a site's heritage while also fulfilling the economic and social demands of the people who live and/or are influenced by the site.
