Project 2: Designing with Architectural Principles and Materiality

(Group) Based on our previous project of the Shrimp House, we extracted its core design principles and elements and incorporated them into a design of our own. Before that, we were also instructed to conduct precedent studies to establish a concept using those same design elements.

The architecture folly incorporated the use of light and shadow. It was two-story in height and used stairs. My fellow groupmates were:

  • Alfred Lim Shyi Yuen

  • Chern Xuan Tong

  • Teoh Jin Wen (myself)

Precedent Studies

From the first discussion, we established a common interest in the Shrimp House: its courtyard. We, therefore, wanted to create a folly that incorporated the use of a courtyard-like element. We then researched on the various designs and functions of a courtyard.

After that, we conducted case studies on buildings that inspired each of us. From the buildings below, we conducted brief analyses of the design elements and principles that were most striking to us, illustrated through diagrams under the guidance of our tutor. From left to right, we extracted ideas of materiality, manipulation of light and general massing.

Based on our precedent studies and the Shrimp House, we decided on the core design principle: Addition and Subtraction. There were several attempts at the design. The general concept, however, was established through few trial and error: Connection. We knew from there that the materiality had to evoke senses of warmth and welcome. With that, we began our narrative and design conception.

Design Process

Here are various sketches and sketch models that were constructed up to our final design.

Reflection and Learning Outcome

Overall, it was my most positive experience in studio. It was very enjoyable to work with people who complemented your shortcomings to ensure everyone could utilize their strengths. This project aided in our communication and collaboration skills as we learned how to build from each others ideas. The final design was also satisfactory in concept and narrative.

MLO 2
Paper Craft

MLO2 - Produce design possibilities through the use of architectonics in a
simple architectural form, space and function.

Breaking down a building to its simplest forms allowed for a freedom in conception. By focusing on a single concept and only elaborating it when needed helped ease the design process.

Craft Materials

MLO 4 - Establish a basic level of understanding of materiality and detailing as a means to capture experiential qualities of the design.

Throguh the precedent studies, lectures, and previous studio projects, we've learned the associations of different materials to distinct atmospheric qualities. For this design, the use of wood was in line with the intention of creating a warm and welcoming space.

TGC 1.1 Able to put theories into practice

Incorporating the knowledge gained from lectures in regards to materiality, design concept etc., as well as the practice of using diagrams to analyze precedent studies from Project 1 was very beneficial to the design conception.

TGC 2.2. Locate, extract, synthesize and utilize information effectively

Using the diagramming principles, we could focus on the desired characteristics of the folly and build upon them. Collaborative sites also helped to centralize the design process.

3.1 To be able to think creatively and critically when the situation calls for it.

There were several situations in which we had to come up with ingenious methods to solve a problem. It has opened up my options on overcoming obstacles.
