Project 1(Minor): Tutorial Exercises– Architectural Graphics, Sketching and Tonal Values

(Ind) Each tutorial lesson at the start of the semester introduced us to various types of drawings, sketching and rendering techniques.

There were a total of 4 tutorial exercises

Tutorial 1: Self Expression

We were given a lot of freedom on what to draw to express ourselves. It was used as a means of assessing our drawing, sketching, and coloring ability as well as an icebreaking session.

I depicted myself as a pink alien. As I felt rather isolated in an unfamiliar environment, I also felt curiosity about the new opportunities and happenings, represented by the fish. As I stand on my tiny planet, I am intimidated yet dazzled by the people around me.

Tutorial 2: Introduction to Tonal Values and Rendering

We were introduced to different shading techniques in the second week. I chose to practice these techniques on a basic sphere. Ultimately, I provided little space for light and quick transitions, creating a spotlight effect. The shadows were also quite inconsistent.

Tutorial 3: Introduction to Architecture Lettering

We were to practice our Architectural lettering using different types of pencil and by writing the lyrics to a chosen song of our liking. I chose the lyrics of "Almost" by Hozier for this tutorial.

Tutorial 4: Exploring Coloring Media and Scale

Copying a floor plan provided by the lecturers, we were free to add our own furnishings and were to color the plan to show depth and texture as best we could.

Reflection

I was exposed to the key skills that I must hone in order for future illustrations to be presentable and well informative.
